  • Wrong kind of Snow? January 14, 2010
Remember in 1991 when we had the wrong kind of snow for British Rail to keep the tracks clear, well I have the wrong kind of images for the image editing workshop! No seriously, amongst my 1,000’s of images - I never seem to have taken photos of interesting doorways, signs, vintage writing or wonderful faces.  [...] […]

Foxglove Fasciation

In July 2008 I sowed the seeds for Digitalis ‘Stewartii’

(Well I am 98 percent sure it was ‘Stewartii’, the information is still on the old computer)

So, for two years I have been watching this plant, the first year there was a rosette of quite attractive green leaves,

Which took up a lot of space and did not seem too promising

This month, however, they have sent up their flower spikes and my patience has been rewarded.

One of the foxgloves however was a little strange, although I didn’t realize it until quite recently.

By then of course it was far to late to pull it out because I was so interested to see how it would develop.

This is known as “fasciation’.

I have seen it quite often on forsythia, but not on foxgloves, although they are a plant that can be affected.

Hopefully this foxglove will return next year with out fasciated stems,

I do find it totally absorbing, as it changes shape each day.

The RHS page on Fasciation is here if you would like more information

Wow, that Foxglove is amazing, I love how it has so many flowers open all at once…

And even more amazing must be the ‘fascination’, very apt indeed!

  • very odd~and strangely compelling! The first photo looks like little foxglove faces with teeth and a jutted chin~I just had a bite of chocolate and may be revved up a bit! xxgail

The faciation has changed since Sunday. It looks like the handels on a Harly Davidson today. The ones where the rider is almost prone with his feet on the hub of the front wheel and his head almost laying on the rear!!
The Digitalis ‘Stewartii’ is very sweet. Gails descriptin is very apt.

Its strange, isnt it? I had lots of white hesperis that did this last year,I had to go and look to see how it they developed. This is a very beautiful foxglove, I shall go looking for seed.

  • How interesting! And what a lovely flower – as lovely as the whole of your very interesting blog! Thank you for sharing,

Some of my delphiniums did that last year, but the same plants didn’t do it again this year. So hopefully yours won’t repeat. I don’t know what causes it for sure, but I guessed it was bugs chewing on the growing points just as the flower stalk started developing. I should probably look it up to be sure. Your pictures manage to make it look pretty!

  • Thank you for this information! One of my lilies was fasciated this spring. It was odd, but after I pinched off some of the crazy-close buds, it was able to bloom.
