Sadly my dog Merlin died at the weekend.
He had had a long and I like to think happy life.
The house – and garden is very quiet without him.
I will miss him.

Very sad. But they stay with you in so many ways. We have lost several of our dogs of old age in the last two years, so I understand the loss. It is a time to reflect on what they brought to daily life, which is rich and wonderful!!!!!

Karen, I’m sorry. Our Sidney is now 16 years old and is definitely showing his advanced age these days. Our pets can certainly be a wonderful part of our family. It will be hard to lose him. Just know people (me) are caring about you. SG

Karen, I feel for you. It’s so sad and painful, and creates such an emptyness in our hearts when they leave us. What a beautiful dog. Smart eyes. I am sure he had a happy life. Hug you,

My condolences to you Karen. I know how you must feel. Pets give us such unconditional love, they are always happy to see us and maybe that is why we miss them so when they go. I’m sure you are right and he did have a long and happy life. After our dog died at 17, I would see him just out of the corner of my eye sometimes. An illusion actually, but I thought maybe he was saying goodbye to me. Silly I suppose but we did miss him. Now finally we can laugh about all the happy memories he gave us.

What a lovely picture of Merlin. It is so hard to lose such a loved pet, they are both friends and family members and you probably spend more time with them than anyone else. Virtual hugs to you. AS

Sad news. Losing a loved pet can be heartbreaking – even when you know they are getting on in years and are half expecting something to happen. It does leave an empty space.

Hello Karen
I saw your link on the sidebar of my friend Chris’ blog Notes from A Somerset Garden & wanted to leave a little comment when I read about sweet Merlin ♥ What a gorgeous dog & I know you must have wonderful memories. I understand the pain … We lost our almost 12 yr old black lab Bentley a year and a half ago. This past December, we adopted an 11 year old black lab named Ernest ~ a true joy.
A long and happy life – yes. Full of character – yes. And we mustn’t forget the sheer joy of life that he had and his natual curiosity about what was going on about him. What’s that, what’s going on there? He made friends of all your visitors and was always pleased to see people. He will be missed and I’m sure the house is very quiet and still without him.
So sorry, Karen. Dogs are such good friends. He was adorable, and I sure liked his name.
So sorry, Karen – sending more virtual hugs.

What a sweet looking doggie… I’m sorry for your loss.
So sorry to hear that. I am a cat rather than a dog person, but that doesn’t change the level of understanding!

I’m so sorry, Karen. I dread losing my Pushkin – I think we have a closer relationship with our pets than we do with many humans. It’s devastating when you lose one. Lots of hugs.

Oh you poor thing, losing a pet is hard, especially when they have been with you for so long. Your Merlin was a very handsome chap and the sweet expression on his widdle face says it all: the bestest of doggywogs ever!
Take care my dear, I know it’s hard ((HUGS))

What a beautiful dog. I lost my dog Brooks 6 months ago after 13 years. Never knew this was such a painful and traumatic experience. I am sure Merlin could not have had a better life. Wishing you all the strength and may Merlin rest in peace!!
Oh Karen, I am so sorry for your terrible loss. What a great photo of your dear departed doggie, he looks like an unfurling bright flower there.
We lost our cat over 5 years ago and I still miss him, even had a dream about him last night. Animals are such an important part of our lives. I hope you are doing okay. Sending healing thoughts your way.
