How do you know when Spring has arrived in your garden?
Is it when your new beautiful double yellow hellebore flowers?
This one was a birthday gift from my Mother – and she is very shy -
The Hellebore that is, not my Mother.
Do you know that Spring has arrived when the leaves start breaking on the willow tree?
Perhaps the herald of spring is a bright primula?
If I was a half decent garden photographer I would have carefully brushed all the soil off this bright little face.
Perhaps you know that Spring is here when the gaudy tulips that you got as an unlooked for “free gift” open their petals in the afternoon sun?
Or you know that spring is definitely here when the delicious anemone coronaria “Bordeaux” unfurls
With a colour so rich and deep that the camera has difficulty in capturing it.
Although all of these are signs of spring in the garden – for me the real sign of spring is when the air suddenly takes on a softness
The garden has a numinous quality and you simply know that Spring has arrived.
I will be away from my computer for the next week -
But please do leave a comment to say how YOU know when spring has arrived in your garden.

Happy Spring to you and your garden! Lovely Lovely blooms!!

Isn’t it amazing how the gardens have changed so much after this last mild week? My hellebores have ben extra special this year, too…but it might just be that I am so desperate for blooms that Im appreciating them to much. Lovely pictures Karen, even the one with dirt on it
When the Spring Beauties and other sweet ephemerals bloom; when the birds ratchet up their singing a few notches; when the wind feels warm and the earth smells delicious; that’s how I know it’s spring! …and Hedge blooms so yellow the sun doesn’t have to come out! Karen your blooms are wonderful and I love your shy double yellow hellebore! Is it Golden Lotus? Happy Spring to you and your family! gail

I’m never sure. Either spring arrives in September, when things turn green and the birds arrive. Or spring arrives in March, when the first California poppies open and the birds that didn’t leave start building nests. Maybe we have spring twice.
Just beautiful…

Do have fun whilst away from your computer, Karen, and lots of hugs and kisses to all involved! Your flowers and leaves are wonderful and do bring smiles and cheers of spring. The freebie tulips are amazing! We are enjoying the yellow sea of daffodils at the moment, but do not consider spring to be here until the Japanese maple leaves unfold.

For me its the Daffs but really its when the Prunus tree bursts into bloom and is covered in bees – so far only tight buds

Beautiful photos, especially the artistic composition of the draping willow branches! I know spring is here when my body aches at night because I’ve been outside on my hands and knees too long. And when the forsythia pops, which it is just starting to do today (still no daffodil blooms here yet, but soon)

Beautiful blooms:-) Spring really has arrived
When there are so many primroses you can snip fistfuls for the house without spoiling the garden display. Glad you don’t brush your petals either!
Hah – you not a good photographer! That’s a crock – your images are wonderful, especially the willow shot. Around here, spring has arrived when the herons & egrets return.

Your photos are absolutely amazing! Oh I do love those tulips, they are so cheerful looking. And the color of the anemone is luscious. Spring is really here as well, both our birdhouses have tenants already.

I completely agree with you as to how you know Spring is here.
Bulbs do not make Spring.
I think it is actually when the herbaceous plants start to poke through in some number and there is a sense of something phenomenal, which becomes yearly more important to me, is unfurling.
Best Wishes
Robert
Surely if you had dusted the soil off the petals it would be the same as the airbrushing that goes on for the shots on the front of veg seed packets? In other words, not telling it as it is!
Spring is here when I can get out into the garden after work as the clocks have gone forward. This weekend thankfully. (Must find my Tiger Balm to soothe those aching muscles).
Have a good break.
spring…. red bursting from maple buds. yellow from Forsythia, and the too northern Magnolias praying for above normal temps. that and the weeds growing like mad in my yards

Karen,

It looks as though your garden is awakening just beautifully. The hellebores are beautiful. We are just beginning to see the tulips poking up from beneath the soil. It won’t be long now…

Daffidils. Suddenly there are daffodils.
And the light has changed. All of a sudden, there are green days instead of grey ones.

I have been away from the garden, and when I came back, all the slightly dodgy large daffodils were blooming in the hedges outside my gate. Very yellow, but also very springlike. Also a scent on the air, sweet with the promise of spring….
Spring arrives at the first sighting of butterflies and bees in the garden – both have happened in the last week
What a special birthday gift.

Beautiful photos, as always, Karen. I thought you weren’t keen on yellow? That yellow hellebore is a delight.
For me, Spring has arrived when I see the peonies starting to peep above the ground.

Amazing photos! I love looking a spring blooms. I also am on a search for a double yellow Helleborus for my garden. Do you by chance know what variety that plant is?
Ah, gorgeous, Karen. Spring is here!

There are no flowers in this set of amazing pictures and yet they still look so vibrant and rich. Great post.
I know that Spring has arrived when I decide I like my garden at this time of the year the best! I’ve been taking photos of my hellebores today. I love the frills on yours. x
