To-day the rain returned and as it was several degrees warmer all remnants of the snow has vanished and the garden looks ….
Well, woe begotten I suppose.
I think because of the hard weather we have had over the past month the garden is way behind last year when I had Hope and Promise.
This year I have texture
Lots of Texture
And I am very thankful for the grasses that I have started planting around the place
I am also pleased that I have learnt to appreciate seed heads, and no longer dead head
And every month when bloom day comes around I appreciate this Libertia “Goldfinger” as it never fails to look good.
I may have mislead you in my opening sentence, because while crawling around I did spot this, the only “bloom” in An Artist’s Garden” this January
Thank goodness for Hellebores.
To see what else is in bloom around the corner and around the world please visit Carol at May Dreams Garden

And beautiful texture you have. Very nice captures.

Very beautiful. I adore seed heads for they attract all manner of little birds!

I shall be inspecting my hellebores in the morning. Hope they appreciated the blanket of snow.
There is always something of interest in your garden, be it seed heads, textures or blooms. Guess you did have to crawl around to get that last shot. Hope you remembered to put something on the wet ground before you got “down & dirty”.
With textures like that who needs flowers? Lovely. The seedheads are at least as spectacular as most flowering plants.

These are a great collection of photos just to get us all in the mood for gardening – it’s much milder here today but just how long that will last – who knows!! We better make the most of it whilst it lasts! I’ve got a job dealing with a mass of mole hills that have obviously been forming under the snow
all over the lawn. Have a good week Mx

Thank goodness for Hellebores. Love ‘em, but mine aren’t doing their thing yet. I have buds on one type. Yes, you should post for Foliage Follow-Up (Digging blog tomorrow). You have wonderful foliage. Happy Bloom Day.~~Dee

The snow has been slowly, slowly melting during the course of the day. It looks as if a giant has been sitting on the garden.

I have yet to find my Hellebores through the snow and my husband cut back a lot of my dead herbascious plants in a fit of gardening Why doesn’t he consult the gardener first!

Mmm, I must have hellebores out there under the snow. It is blowing hard now and should be raining by morning. Maybe I will find them again.
I am still waiting to be convinced by grasses but every time I see yours I wonder. Love the seedheads.

My hellebores haven’t awoken yet… and although the snow here has receded (a temporary reprieve I’m sure), there’s no sign of my snowdrops. They sometimes rear their sweet little heads through the snow in January, even here in Toronto. My blooms day post has a very similar title.

Hi Karen,
It feels like I haven’t seen my garden for weeks on end, when it’s only been covered in snow for a week! But on and off for around two or three weeks it’s been covered so I actually have very little idea what’s in bloom.
However I popped out this evening and noticed most of my pots are now clear of snow and there are a couple of things in bloom and plenty of bulbs teasing me!
I’m sure your garden will quickly begin to wake up now the snow and ice is gone

You have a garden filled with expectations and delights, Karen. Blooms are sometimes overrated, and I love that you focus on texture and foliage as well as the more transient flowers.

Frances I love your texture pictures. The seed heads of the Astilbe and Sedum. I always cut down my astilbe but looking at yours I should leave them. So pretty.

I think I’ve said it before, TGFH – thank goodness for Hellebores. Too bad mine are still buried under the snow. I’ve been leaving more seedheads too, but when you get so much snow & some of it is wet, some of those seedheads get mashed to a pulp. I’m glad yours still look good. My Sedum seedheads were doing fine until the deer decided to sample them. Deer don’t like Sedum seedheads.

Karen, a hellebore blooming?? That’s fantastic. I should head outdoors to check mine, but I’ve never had anything bloom until April or so… Your photos were great!

Grasses and bamboos are my saviours at this time of year. I too had nothing to contribute to the blooms part of this month! We move house in a week so not even a tulip or snowdrop etc was planted last year ~ (we’re meanies, we weren’t planting them for someone else to benefit from!).
Lovely photos though, had I know you could ‘cheat’ I could have taken foilage one myself…..

Wonderful images Karen! I fear they could have a snow covering now. Hope not
Wonderful photos as usual. We’ve been getting more into grasses as well. And you have reminded me to get out and check my hellebores for blooms too.
Lovely color, texture, and form, Karen (especially fond of the first photo)!
