  • Wrong kind of Snow? January 14, 2010
Remember in 1991 when we had the wrong kind of snow for British Rail to keep the tracks clear, well I have the wrong kind of images for the image editing workshop! No seriously, amongst my 1,000’s of images - I never seem to have taken photos of interesting doorways, signs, vintage writing or wonderful faces.  [...] […]

Belated New Year Greetings and Snow

Snow in "An Artist's Garden"

The UK is experiencing heavy snows just now – we don’t actually get much snow fall in the garden as we live right on the coast – but even our garden had a sprinkling of snow this afternoon with more forecast for this evening.  It is also bitterly cold.

Thanks to everyone who left comments on my Christmas letter – we had a fabulous Christmas and New Year and it was wonderful to spend time with my family and friends.  Since then however – I must confess to simply hibernating as my brain has turned to mush … although this maybe something to do with the vertigo that has struck again – to boring for words but I am sure the osteopath will sort me out when I see her on Friday.

I do hope that 2010 will be a great year for you all (and that it will rain less in Wales!)

I bet Merlin was warmer than us today! Got sent home from work this afternoon due to the weather. Will probably end up walking in the morning!! Oh well, will make up for missing the Sunday walk. Feel better soon.

  • Happy New Year to you too. The dog looks very much at home in the snow – he should be pulling a sleigh (or am I mixing him up with Santa?). Doesn’t snow make everything look magical.
Eeek! – have looked out of the window and it is snowing here. I am determined on making a snow man if enough falls. I will not go all wimpy with the cold like last week.

  • Hi Karen – that Mersey estuary has not saved us from a copious amount of snow today. Your dog looks well equipped for the elements. Sorry to hear that you have been suffering. Hope that you are soon on the mend. Take care and all best wishes for the new year. May all your flowers flourish!

The snow looks lovely, and I’m sure you’ll enjoy it just as much as the rest of us… Haha, perhaps not very much at all!

Ours has continued to fall and I’ll estimate over 20cm personally, I’ll be out measuring it tomorrow. So glad I chose to take the day off tomorrow!

  • Karen:
I must day that the UK has definitely seen a lot of bizarre weather lately! I love that the bones of your garden are still so particularly evident – interesting that they seem to come alive when barren of foliage. I love the turquoise hint that the building and fence give to the entire photo….. quite smashing! Happy New Year as well! As to the brain feeling like mush….. blame it on the cold and snow….. brain freeze! Happens to the best of us this time of year!

  • Glad you had a nice holiday. Did you lay about, looking at seed catalogs like I did? Beautiful garden, one, that I know will only improve with age.

  • Happy New Year…a little hibernating is always a good thing, especially in winter. Here’s hoping that you’ll soon get through with the vertigo.

  • Karen,
Your garden looks lovely covered in it’s dusting of snow. I am glad that you enjoyed the holidays, and best wishes for the New year!! Sometimes a little hibernating is good for the soul… Hope you are feeling better soon.

Hi Karen, the garden looks great under snow,as does the handsome Merlin!Sorry about the vertigo, hope it clears up soon. We have drifted snow, quite deep, and very cold.

  • Lovely shot of your garden. Crossing my fingers that none of your plants are damaged by the unusual weather.

I hope you will be feeling better soon, Karen. I have a vertigo-inducing virus, picked up years ago at university, that recurs occasionally. It’s very irregular and unpredictable, I might go a year or more without experiencing any symptoms. But when it hits, life is miserable indeed, and you’re right, the brain turns to absolute mush. I so much sympathize!

  • Hi Karen – really sorry to hear that you’ve been suffering with Vertigo – it’s horrible and no fun as I’ve had it too – in the past it’s been due to stress I think and being over tired although the last lot I had about 2yrs ago was when I had something out in my neck – so hope your osteo can help you. I have had Stemetil (think this is how it’s spelt) from the doctors before which has been great. Do take care and hope you’re feeling better v. soon Miranda x

Couldn’t move my car today due to sheet ice on side roads, so decided to walk to work. It just so happened that our MD picked me up about a mile from home. Wonder how many brownie points I got!! Must remember that the pay reviews are in July …… lots of plants I want for the garden!

  • Lovely Winter Scene – hope you’ll be feeling better very soon. We’re supposed to receive a little more snow tonight. (I hope so – and I hope I can stay home all day! I love Winter for that occasional holiday from the normal schedule!) ;-)

  • The snow looks positively exotic to this warm-climate gardener. But I wonder if the combination of cold and garden deprivation might be contributing to the vertigo? Whatever the origin, I hope you’re feeling much better soon!

I hope you stay warm and dry during the rough weather. Sounds like hibernating might be just what you need until you’re feeling better. Good to hear you had a nice holiday.
Even with all the white in the photo, how nice that you still have some green on that fence in the back! Good color choice.

  • Your garden looks lovely in the snow. Mine has all but disappeared under the latest deluge of white stuff and my dogs are nowhere near as photogenic as yours. I am envious of the strong structure your garden displays in snow – mine is just humps and bumps.

  • Your garden looks lovely with that nice frosting, just enough to enjoy, but not so much as to cause concern. I hope you’re feeling better soon.

  • Happy new year, Karen!
I’ve been hibernating too – it is the weather for it.
Your garden does look lovely with a dusting of snow – I’m not usually prone to whimsy but I think it looks like something out of a fairytale.

  • I like that photo Karen – as a photo in its own right, not just an illustration of what your garden is like at the moment. There’s lots in it to keep one’s eye moving around the page and the presence of the dog looking back out of the picture gives it colour, life and a sense that there is more to see beyond the frame.
