We have had lots of rain over the past week or so, turning the garden into a rather uninviting quagmire.
Last November for GBBD I was excited by the textures in the garden.
This year, because of the introduction of new grasses, my eye was caught by the variety of seed heads that I have -
Although maybe they stood out because I have so few flowers – no change from last year then.
Apart from a large pot of Marguerites – that seem to be doing astonishingly well, and of course the bedding geraniums are also doing well -
This is because I am waiting for both types of plants to be “over” so I can move them to the greenhouse and replant the large planters with tulips.
For a slide show of seed-heads and (a few) flowers, please click on the picture below.
As ever, my thanks go to Carol at May Dreams Garden – please go visit her to see what else in blooming around the world in November.

Is your last photo of a real eating olive? They’re very cute! I loved all your photos of dead and dying blooms. I know what you mean about being ready for the gardening season to end. Unfortunately when you leave in a temperate climate like me it never ends!

Nice Show, Karen! I’m pretty much ready to stay indoors. I know I said I was going to leave the rake in the shed, but there are just a few leaves lying around that need to find their way to a different residence.

I’ve got a seed posting coming up this week too. However, I LOVE the purple grass. My immediate thought was, “can I grow it here in Michigan?” What is it?

Hi Karen, I love the show! Your seed heads, and the spiky things! were wonderful. I am most interested in the Grevillea, it was at our local nursery and seemed to ring a bell of some kind as I looked at the tag. She did have it in the heated greenhouse, is your inside or out? Happy day after bloom day!

Great slide show Karen. I like looking at seedheads close up – such amazing mechanisms. I forgot to tell you that after drooling over your photo earlier this year I bought Rudbeckia fulgida dreamii at the Malvern Autumn Show

What lovely seedheads and grasses. They extend the joy of the garden . Mostly more joyful to look at through the kitchen window with a coffee…but hey!!
Happy GBBD Karen, thoroughly enjoyed the show! You have just shown all the elements of the garden at this time of year. I love seeing these changes… hope Jack Frost stays away a little longer so you can get lots of inspiration for your work

Your slideshow was splendid, and I really enjoyed those macro shots. Thank you and Happy bloom day. Do you have trouble with garlic chives being invasive? I really do. They escaped my garden and plan on taking over a hillside. World domination too I think.~~Dee

You have lots of colour – I thought you said the only colour was from the plant labels!
My grevillia looks very different to yours. The flowers are similar, although they arent out but the leaves are more conifer like unless I am confused and it isnt a grevillia at all which could be the case as I am at work and my memory is shocking at the moment!!!!!
By the way really appreciated the phone call yesterday

Lovely slide show I noticed that we have quite a few blooms and seed heads in common. Grasses rock at this time of year.

Your photos of faded flowers and seedheads capture the stark beauty of late autumn. I should learn not to be so quick with the deadheading.

Now, my garden is sodden and soggy. Yours is apparently filled with great light and textures. I love the backlit shots and the touches of blue and green in the backgrounds behind some of the golden seedheads. Gorgeous!

Karen, A wonderful slideshow; seedheads are as beautiful as flowers…The dahlia was incredible. The painted salvia was a new one for me. Love how it looks…I wonder if Chiltern sells the seed? gail

I stayed in the U.K. for a summer when I was younger,
I remember Wales from Swansea and also Snowdonia,
we stayed in an old hotel in snowdonia that was castle
like and had a turret(S)with a point and part of a room inside, near some farmland
and over a little bridge over a rushing river. I remember wonderful
food and lush landscape, thank you for taking me back to the gardens there!

I lived in Wales for many years and still have a house in Pembrokeshire where I stay about a third of the time (in a good year) – I love my garden there too.

Actually, I think I might prefer seed heads over the flowers. They are the unsung heros of the garden, since without them, there would be no flashy flower.

Your slide shows are always worthwhile, Karen. I admire your collection of seedheads, plus that closeup of Grevillea really made me long for it. I also realized, I’ve never thought to look at fuchsia seedpods. Or dahlia seedpods.
I enjoyed all of your photos Karen, and the seedheads and dried blooms are as beautiful and artful as the flowers themselves.
Beautiful blooms, Karen. I always enjoy your slideshows. The dahlia seedpod is really beautiful. I am so jealous of your Camellia’s.
If only they would grow here in Vermont!
