  • Wrong kind of Snow? January 14, 2010
Remember in 1991 when we had the wrong kind of snow for British Rail to keep the tracks clear, well I have the wrong kind of images for the image editing workshop! No seriously, amongst my 1,000’s of images - I never seem to have taken photos of interesting doorways, signs, vintage writing or wonderful faces.  [...] […]
  • Clear March Skies March 9, 2010
The weather here continues to be amazing. With glorious days, lots of sunshine (no coats needed). And clear, clear sky – meaning the night-time temperatures drop to about -7c The plants are confused – but I’m happy […]

Rudbeckia occidentalis – Green Wizard

green-wizard

After about 4 years, my Rudbeckia “Green Wizard” has some flowers on it – great cause for celebration.

Every other year – the plant has been eaten to the ground by slugs – it seems they like it even more than Hosta.

Last year I moved it nearer the house, where I could keep an eye out for the marauding pests.

So there I was quietly happy about the flowers on my Rudbeckia … then I read Nigel / Silvertree Daze’s amusing post,

referring (among other things) to Green Wizard

Click the link below to read Nigel’s post.

Plugugly and Foetid to boot

I may never again see my Rudbeckia occidentalis “Green Wizard” in quite the same way.

Oh dear Karen. And you were so excited. Don’t forget, beauty is in the eye of the beholder, and if it has taken this much effort to grow, it must be worth it. Perhaps it’s that at the moment is has a wonderful plain simplicity. Let’s see how you feel once it has aged a bit!

I am still pleased with it Dobby – I think it will look brilliant in a flower arrangement.

  • If I cared very deeply what others think about my plants, I probably would not grow CA natives. They’re a little weird. But I think they’re all amazing — well, most of them — and it gives me great joy to watch them thrive, watch the critters visit… who needs boring plants.

Town Mouse’s last blog post..Tilden Botanical Garden

Thanks for the lovely comment Town Mouse, I think what amused me most is that what one gardener delights in – another loathes!

  • Oh dear, I gather the “turd on a stick” look wasn’t what you were going for, haha! Doby is right, beauty is in the eye of the beholder.

Carrie’s last blog post..So then, the AGM…. (plus Andrew is 30 today!)

You are so right Carrie – whats more – I have about 6 plants of it ;)

  • I just planted some rust-red rudbeckia starts my mom gave me, didn’t know about the slugs, they all got gnawed down to a nub, so I guess I’ll try again next year and be more vigilant. I like your flower, foo on Nigel. I think it looks like a fairy hut or a little thimble or something much more enchanting than the poo reference.

Karen’s last blog post..Alien Seed Pods

I will post a picture when it gets bigger – and possibly more revolting looking ;)

  • It is quite an unusual looking flower but I wouldn’t go quite as far as Nigel’s description.

Joanne’s last blog post..NATURE OR NURTURE?

It is not what you could call lovely in any sense of the word – but I do find it “interesting” ;)

  • Congrats! It IS a beautiful thing….no matter how ungainly the Rudbeckia can be sometimes (elsewhere of course!) :)

    Plant Lady’s last blog post..Weekly Walk June 22 2009

Welcome Plant Lady and thanks for taking time to leave a comment, I think I will see how I can work it into the boarder – as I say I do have a few to play with :)

  • This one is new to me, I will have to read up on it. We had slugs a long time ago in the garden, but they have kind of faded away, thank goodness. The green wizard is plain, but attractive.

  • Okay, so I am going to give thanks to three Rudbeckia which I planted last fall and are blooming like mad, maybe even give them some wordless praise at my blog. Glad your patience brought you much beauty and joy.
