Why does the writing come OFF plant labels if you really need to know what the seedlings are?
And stay ON plant labels after you have washed them?

I’ve given up on labels. I use egg cartons, which I write on directly. And plastic cups or containers, which I reuse for the same seeds.

They look very familiar Karen – could they be Jacob’s Ladder ?

I remember trying to read the faded letters on your labels last year trying to decipher which garlic was which! This problem is why I probably don’t bother with labels:)
GOOD Question!
I’ve been writing with those craft paint tubes. It’s acrylic paint… it seems to stay a little longer! “Sharpies” don’t work for me at all.

Yes! This is true! It’s happened so many times to me! I do my permanent labeling with a label maker though and that works very well. Do you know what all you planted? Perhaps you (or we) can figure it out by a process of elimination.
You use seed labels?!!!! How efficient. I just try and remember.. but this method doesn’t work either. The most enduring “label” was written in Tippex on a slate stone for my salad bed. It is still perfectly legible after 4 years out in the garden. Pity I don’t grow that salad mix any more.

I’ve given up trying to figure that one out! I find pencil seems to work best…

I use aluminium plant labels for the perennials in the garden borders. Pencil is supposed to meld in some way with the surface of the aluminium and become immovable – Ha…I think not! I’ve used every kind of pencil and this process has never happened. This accounts for the fact that I have 11 pencils in a jar in my potting area.

I use pencil as well – it does fade abit but normally the seeds germinate before it gets too bad – normally that is!!

Hi Karen, I have been there too. I found labels that got this matt finish and an ordinary pencil (lead/grahpite) works excellent on them. I was just about to begin to clean them now for this seasons seedlings

Hi Karen`
Planting seeds is always a mystery to me. This way it will be a surprise when you figure out what the plant is.

Hi Karen, as has been said, lead pencil seems to stay on. I learned of this from Nan Ondra’s post about tags for Gardening Gone Wild. That is why a pencil is included with the tags, why didn’t I think to use it? I figured it would smudge off but seems to stay on nicely. Who knew? Your seedlings look like larkspur or nigella?

And I have learned this first hand by my recent seed-planting experiment. I’m glad it wasn’t just me who wrote on the tags w/permanent marker only to find them smudged & faded the next day. It does seem a mystery why ’stuff’ you WANT to come off just will not come off no matter how hard you scrub. Go figure. Like most of life, it’s a mystery to me;-/

Another one of those gardening mysteries designed to drive us whackier.

Freaking hell! Do you think you’ll figure it out in time to plant them in the right place? I always forget what I plant too. Sometimes I put a row marker in but I think the crows steal them. Or the squirrels.

That picture is really irritating me as I think I recognise the seedlings – which is unusual as I am rubbish at seeds (my wife is much better). Cosmos? Nigella? I dunno.
Pencil is always best for plant labels.
Thanks for all the suggestions -
James – You probably DO recognize the seedling because there is a good chance that it is something I am growing because of something YOU have written
because it is one very cool goofball universe we live in… enjoy the ride.
